Mr. James K. Mc Allister, Regional Parliamentarian for the Essequibo Island / West Demerara has written Head of the Presidential, the Minister of Health and the Minister of Public Works in relation to the ongoing flooding at Phoenix, Leguan and surrounding areas.

Mr. Mc Allister has asked the Minister of Health to dispatch a medical team to the areas to assess the health situation and to take necessary steps to avert a disease outbreak. So far no visits were made to the area by health personnel despite the fact that this situation has been on going for three weeks.

Mr. Mc Allister has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Public Works so that the Minister can update him on the Ministry’s plans to bring relief to the residents. He has also request information on the long-term plans for the sea and river defences of Leguan.

The issue of compensation was raised with Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon. Dr. Luncheon has been request to arrange for a visit to assess damage and losses by appropriate government personnel.

The PNCR hopes that these senior government representatives will act responsibly so that the suffering people of Leguan can benefit from speedy relief and necessary compensation.

Over the last the weeks the residents of the village of Phoenix, Leguan have been inundated with floodwaters due to the collapse of the “sea defence” in the area. This situation has created considerable risk of water borne and other diseases.

So far there has been no visits to the area by personnel of the Ministry of Health. As Regional Parliamentarian for Essequibo Islands / West Demerara, I am requesting an urgent visit by the relevant personnel of the Ministry of Health to assess the situation and to take the necessary precautionary steps to avert a major disease outbreak.
