PRESS RELEASE People’s National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia. Georgetown, Guyana. Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Residents of Crabwood Creek on the Corentyne, Berbice are up in arms over the decision of the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development to impose an Interim Management Committee (IMC) of his own choice to replace the elected Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

In a petition to Minister in the Ministry, Mr. Clinton Collymore dated August 18, 2004, the residents called on the Government to hold consultations with them prior to determining the persons who should be selected to comprise the new body.

However yesterday, Monday October 25, 2004, Minister Collymore accompanied by Regional Chairman Kumkarran Ramdass and Mohamed Mustapha, PPP/C Member of Parliament, descended on the village and installed an eleven person Council under the Chairmanship of one Surujpaul Mackerchand. The other members are Vasco Jordene, Vice Chairman who incidentally is not very well known to the Crabwood Creek residents, Basmat Anjan, Bin, Mr. Ramphal, D. Valmikie, R M Drepaul, C. Sanichar, S. Roopnarine, L. Sumir and H. Paulsura.

The angry residents claim that the new Chairman is a former contractor of the now defunct NDC and has tendered for a contract to rehabilitate the No.4 Sideline at Crabwood Creek.

It is understood that the residents are so upset over the Minister’s action that they plan to take other actions to vent their feelings.
