Newly accredited, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana, H.E. Mr. Bruno Picard, paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform and Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Mr. Robert H.O. Corbin at his Congress Place office, Sophia on Friday October 22, 2004.

Mr. Winston Murray, CCH, MP, Chairman of the PNCR and the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly; Mrs. Deborah Backer, M.P., and Mr. Basil Williams, M.P., Vice-Chairpersons of the PNCR; and Mr. Oscar Clarke, General Secretary of the Party were also present during the courtesy call and participated in the discussions.

The Party Leader cordially welcomed the new High Commissioner and expressed the wish that his tour of duty would be a successful one.

The High Commissioner said that he was happy to be in Guyana and has already experienced the warm hospitality of the Guyanese people.

The two sides reviewed the state of relations between Canada and Guyana which are characterized by a spirit of friendliness and cooperation and are based on the four principles of Independence, complete equality, mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs.

High Commissioner Picard expressed the hope that during his tour of duty Guyana can continue to benefit from Canadian Government Assistance both directly and through the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and Common Market to which he is also accredited.

High Commissioner Picard has replaced High Commissioner Serge Marcoux who has retired from the Canadian Foreign Service.
