PRESS RELEASE “PNCR Leader visits North Sophia.” People's National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia December 8, 2004

On Monday December 6, 2004, the Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Mr. Robert H.O. Corbin, M. P., in his continuing national outreach programme, visited residents of North Sophia. Accompanying him were, Mrs. Volda Lawrence, M.P, Central Executive Committee Member, Ms. Florence Bourne, Georgetown City Councillor, Ms. Cyrilda DeJesus, National Congress of Women Executive Committee Member, Ms. Melanie Cornette, National Secretary of the Guyana Youth and Students’ Movement, Mr. Clayton Hinds and Mr. Gregory Fraser, members of the Georgetown District. During the walk-about, residents raised numerous complaints about issues affecting them, including the enormous water bills albeit they were not receiving water in their taps; the dumping of garbage by unscrupulous persons in the area; the bad roads and the muddy conditions they are likely to face during the rainy season and the high cost of house lots. Many residents expressed grave disappointment that promises made by the President to have infrastructural works commence urgently have not yet materialised. Similar disappointment was expressed by residents of South Sophia when Mr. Corbin and his team visited last Friday December 3, 2004.

He noted that although President Jagdeo had been visiting various areas making financial promises, these were still to be realised. The Leader of the Opposition advised residents to ensure that their morale remained high and to be vigilant in ensuring that the President fulfilled his promises.
