On Saturday, March 12, 2005 the People’s National Congress Reform convened it first General Council Meeting for the year 2005.

This General Council meeting, the highest decision making forum between Biennial Congresses, brought together Party members from all the administrative regions. The meeting was convened under the theme “Building a Platform for, Peace, National Cohesion and Reconstruction”.

Party Vice-Chairman, Mr. Basil Williams, M.P. delivered the welcome remarks and presided over the morning’s session at which the General Secretary’s Report was presented by Mr. Oscar Clarke. Also, a Report of a recent Leadership Retreat held by the Party last weekend, March 4th – 6th in Region 10 was presented by Mr. Deryck Bernard, MP. The discussion which followed charted the Party’s programme of work leading to the national and regional elections.

The General Council is the second major convocation of the PNCR at which its programmes and policies have been refined and made region specific in order that the Party positions itself to carry out the tasks necessary for victory at the polls.

Delivering the main address in the afternoon session of the General Council, under the Chairmanship of Deborah Backer, MP, Vice-Chairman of the Party, Party Leader, Mr. Robert H.O. Corbin, MP urged members of the General Council to implement decisions in a timely and effective manner at all levels of the Party. He also assessed the objective conditions of Guyana and assured Party members that given the crisis situation in the country, the Party will have to craft programmes and policies to help save the nation. He admonished Party members to understand that the time has come for action and that action must encompass a reaching out to all other political forces in a spirit of inclusivity, national cohesion and national unity.
