PRESS RELEASE The PNCR Mourns the Passing of Pope John Paul II People’s National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia, Georgetown, Guyana April 5, 2005

The Peoples National Congress Reform joins with members of the Roman Catholic Communion as well as the entire international community, in mourning the passing of His Holiness the Pope; John Paul II.

Pope John Paul II was one of the most remarkable and gifted leaders on the world scene who brought his considerable stature and talents to the issues affecting world peace and development. A man of considerable intellectual and creative gifts, he led the church by thought word and deed. He was a tireless advocate for democracy, human rights, the plight of the poor, the marginalized and the victims of the social and political ills which plague our world. He was fearless in confronting injustice and the abuse of power wherever it reared its head and lent the considerable moral authority of his office to the cause of justice and morality.

In particular, we must take note of his consistent advocacy for the needs of the developing world and for a more just and fair world economic order. He worked ceaselessly to build bridges between cultures and the world religious communities. As a result, his influence went beyond the bounds of church, religion and faith but pervaded the major discourses and debates of our time. We believe that his was a voice for good and that the entire world owes a debt of gratitude for his contribution.

We also want to assure members of the Roman Catholic communion in Guyana that we share their grief at this loss even as we use his passing as an opportunity to assess the moral lessons, which we may draw from his life and teachings.
