PNCR Member of Parliament, Ms. Genevieve Allen, returned to Guyana on Monday, May 23 2005 after attending the 4th Plenary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Forum of the Americas (FIPA), which brought Parliamentarians from Latin America and the Caribbean together, was held in Brasilia, Brazil from 19th – 21st May, 2005.

This 4th Assembly was a follow-up to two Sub-Regional Forums of FIPA’s Women Parliamentarians of the Americas held in Bridgetown, Barbados, on 21st -22nd of March, 2005 and in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 6th – 8th April, 2005. The Barbados meeting for Parliamentarians of the Caribbean and North America looked at “Enhancing Women’s leadership to Strengthen Democracy, while the Argentine meeting focused on Increased Leadership of Women for the strengthening of Democratic Governance. Ms. Allen had also been the lone Parliamentarian from Guyana to attend the previous meeting in Barbados. The reports form these to Women Forums were presented to the 4th Plenary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Forum of the Americas.

In Brasilia the Group of Women Parliamentarians of the Americas agreed to “submit the recommendations of parliamentarians regarding women, poverty and employment made at the sub-regional forums to the Heads of States and government at the Fourth Summit of the Americas in Mar del Plata, Argentina, November 4 – 5, 2005, and that, through FIPA, the voice of parliamentarians be taken into account in promoting social dialogue that commits governmental and social actors to a development model with more and better employment”.

Of importance also at this conference was the fact that Ms. Glynis Roberts, who represented Grenada, was elected as the Caribbean representative on the Executive Committee of FIPA.
