PRESS RELEASE People's National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia, Georgetown, Guyana. Monday, January 23, 2006

On Monday, January 23, 2005, the Leader of the People's National Congress Reform, Mr. Robert Corbin visited the East Coast flood affected areas of Golden Grove, Nabacalis and Victoria. Accompanying him was Mr. Ernest Elliott, Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Party and Regional Councilor. At Golden Grove the team was joined by Mr. Bertie De Weever, Chairman of the NDC.

The residents were very distressed and complained about the flood waters, which was almost two feet in some homes, and had been on the land for about two weeks. Some of the residents also noted that they had water on the land since December. They complained that the Government’s response to their situation was haphazard and inept. Many of them had lost livestock, crops and property. They also complained about the unfulfilled promised made by the President that the pumps would have been delivered by Sunday and some relief would have been given to their village.

According to the residents of Victoria and Nabacalis, the alleged burning of a “koker” as disclosed by a notice on the NCN television, was false. They said that Victoria never had any koker except for a concrete sluice structure and that Nabacalis has a trap door also made of concrete.

The PNCR will be monitoring developments in these areas.
