PRESS RELEASE People's National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia, Georgetown, Guyana. Monday, January 23, 2006

On Wednesday, January 18, 2006, The Leader of the People's National Congress Reform and Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin MP made a follow up visit to West Coast Berbice. Accompanying him were members of the Central Executive Committee, Ms. Amna Ally MP and Ms. Jennifer Wade and they were joined by Ms. Carol Joseph, Party’s Regional Secretary for Region 5.

During the visit the residents complained of the water being on the land for more than four weeks and still rising instead of going down. They highlighted their many losses of crops, livestocks and valuables in their homes. They were also exposed to severe skin conditions caused by the water.

The residents at Hopetown were very upset at Government officials such as the Prime Minister, Mr. Sam Hinds and Minister of Health, Mr. Leslie Ramsammy who passed through the village and refused to stop. When the villagers approached them, they were threatened by their security that if they came nearer they would be shot.

Mr. Corbin advised the residents to document their losses and that he would file a motion in Parliament the next day in representation of all the flooded communities that he had visited.

The areas visited were Belladrum, No. 28, Hopetown and Trafalgar.
