PRESS RELEASE PNCR LEADER ATTENDS CEREMONY TO USHER IN ISLAMIC NEW YEAR People's National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia, Georgetown, Guyana. Monday, February 6, 2006

Leader of the People's National Congress Reform, Mr. Robert Corbin MP was invited by the Muslim Youth League of Guyana and did attend on February 5, 2006 a ceremony held to usher in the Islamic New Year. Other invitees included Ms. Christine Meyers of the United States Embassy in Georgetown.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Corbin said that the Islamic New Year was a time for serious reflection in order to ensure a secure future. The Islamic community in common with the wider society is facing several challenges on many fronts including that of fashioning a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural society. In addition areas like the Middle East, where Islam had been established many centuries ago, was in a state of crisis.

The PNCR Leader said that in Guyana it was essential for Guyanese to forge a common understanding out of its diverse cultural, religious and ethnic heritage. Unless this was done it would be difficult to take the nation forward. Indeed Guyana should respond to the threats of ethnic conflict and violence by building pillars of hope which could unite the Nation. Mr. Corbin contended that the tenets of peace and tolerance should govern the attitudes and beliefs of the Guyanese people. He urged the Muslim Youth League to share its ideas and views so that the brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity can benefit.
