PRESS RELEASE People’s National Congress Reform – One Guyana Congress Place Secretariat Sophia, Georgetown September 5, 2006

The People’s National Congress Reform condemns the unwarranted arrest of three (3) of its activists at Linden earlier today under the pretext of searching for arms and ammunitions and calls on the Police Force to act professionally and in a non partisan manner.

The PNCR was informed that Messrs Ken Mc Bean, B. Somersaul and Deon Liverpool, were taken into custody by the Police in the early hours of Tuesday morning 5th September 2006, even though nothing was found after the illegal search. Efforts by their relatives to locate them were unsuccessful since the police have been uncooperative.

By all accounts the 2006 General and Regional Elections were conducted in a peaceful manner and the People’s National Congress Reform has acted responsibly throughout this period. The relatives of these activists have begun interpreting the actions of the Police as an attack on the PNCR-1G, because of their affiliation to the Party and more especially, since the rumour is now being spread that they were arrested in connection with the recent fire at NCN facility at Linden.

The People’s National Congress Reform – One Guyana, calls on the authorities to act responsibly and not send a wrong signal of unnecessary harassment of the PNCR-1G activists since this can provide a spark for unhealthy developments in the area.
