PRESS RELEASE Meeting between President Bharrat Jagdeo and Leader of the PNCR, Mr. Robert Corbin at State House On Tuesday 5 September 2006

President Bharrat Jagdeo and Leader of the PNCR, Mr. Robert Corbin, met this afternoon at State House and discussed, among other matters, the Constitutional challenges which arise for the convening of the National Assembly. They agreed that Mr. Doodnauth Singh, the representative of the President, and a representative to be named by Mr. Corbin would meet immediately to determine and recommend an appropriate course of action to overcome the Constitutional difficulties. On the basis of their recommendations, the decision will be made on the timing for the First Sitting of the National Assembly of the Ninth Parliament.

In addition to the above, President Jagdeo and Mr. Corbin explored options for a structured framework for future co-operation, between the Government and the Opposition, to facilitate the effective functioning of the State and the strengthening of the National Assembly.

They agreed that they should meet again, before the end of this month, to elaborate some of the ideas discussed and to develop a consensually agreed programme which could be quickly implemented.
