PRESS RELEASE People’s National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia Georgetown, Guyana Tuesday, November 7, 2006

The People's National Congress Reform extends a warm and cordial welcome to H.E. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Vice-President of the Republic of India to Guyana. The Party has no doubt that his visit will serve to strengthen relations between the two countries.

In welcoming the Vice-President, the PNCR wishes to recall that while in Government the Party enjoyed a long and fruitful association with India in various fields of diplomatic endeavour. The Party is also pleased to note that at the United Nations, the Non Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth, Guyana concerted its diplomatic activities with this Asian giant and pursued a number of initiatives of a political and economic nature based on a commonality of interest and a shared vision. Bilateral relations were constructive, fruitful and beneficial.

Cultural relations were also strengthened when in 1988, the then Vice-President H.E. Shankar Dyal Sharma, headed a large cultural delegation to participate in the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of East Indians in Guyana.

The PNCR notes that the Vice-President’s visit will coincide with the Dedication Ceremony of the Providence Stadium. Guyana appreciates the decision to have a high representative of the Indian Government present to officiate at this ceremony as it was that Government which agreed to fund the construction of the stadium. Guyana has every reason to be grateful for such support as the stadium is critical to the hosting of World Cup Cricket 2007 in general and the Super Eight games in Guyana in particular.

A warm and friendly welcome is therefore extended to Vice-President Shekhawat.
