PRESS RELEASE People’s National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia Georgetown, Guyana Monday, April 30, 2007

The Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform and Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Robert H O Corbin, M.P. expressed grave concern over the alleged appointment of retired Army Officer, Mr. Chabilall Ramsaroop as Deputy Head of the GRA and Head of the Custom and Trade Administration of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).

While all the facts are not yet available to him he is confident that he saw no advertisement by the GRA to fill such an important vacancy in the country. What he knows is that the former substantive holder of the post was off the job for nearly two (2) years and that Mr. Lambert Mark’s Deputy, Ms. Ingrid Griffith was acting in that position for nearly two years. She has more than twenty (20) years service with the Custom Department and is properly qualified. So one is left to wonder on what basis some one who has no experience in Custom and Trade Administration has been fostered in that position than other members of staff in the Custom and Trade Administration.

While Mr. Corbin has great respect for the distinguished service of Mr. Ramsaroop in the military and elsewhere, the issue has nothing to do with him personally; the issue is justice and fair play in the GRA.

The Leader of the Opposition has received reports of discriminatory practices at the GRA and this most recent announcement seem to confirm that these reports are valid or that there is an attempt of continued political interference in the work of the GRA.

The PNCR will be investigating this matter fully and will make a formal statement at a later date.
