PRESS RELEASE MAY DAY MESSAGE 2007

The People’s National Congress Reform salutes the Workers of Guyana and their Unions on the occasion of May Day, 2007.

Workers have had to endure another year of spiraling cost of living, low wages and salaries and the continuous assault on their bargaining rights and agreements by the incumbent PPP/C Administration. This situation has been aggravated by the unconscionable implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Regrettably, the Administration continues to be unconcerned with the plight of the working class of Guyana. Unless workers resolve to collectively deal with these problems, the Government and some recalcitrant employers will continue to trample upon the rights of workers and their Trade Unions.

As we celebrate this May Day, the workers movement remains divided and the work and struggle of the founders of the Trade Union Movement led by Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow seem threatened. Let us, therefore, on this May Day remember the lessons of our long struggle: only in unity lies strength. On this historic day let us pledge to accelerate the efforts to create, again, a united Trade Union Movement in Guyana.

HAPPY MAY DAY TO ALL WORKERS OF GUYANA
