PRESS RELEASE By the Parliamentary Opposition Parties PNCR-1G, AFC and GAP-ROAR Thursday, 31 May, 2007

The Parliamentary Opposition Parties met today with the Opposition Commissioners, to, among other matters; review the outcome of their meeting, with the Chairman and Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), on Tuesday, 22 May, 2007.

The Parliamentary Opposition Parties wish it to be noted that they were reassured by the Commission’s confirmation of their decision, at their meeting on 20 February, 2007, that House-to-House Registration is the preferred method for the preparation of a Clean Voters’ List, which would be periodically up-dated by the conduct of Continuous Registration, in preparation for the forthcoming Local Government and all future Elections in Guyana.

The Commission informed the Parties that they were in the process of refining the methodology and budget for the conduct of House-to-House Registration and would notify them of any material developments in that regard.

The Parties notified the Commissioners of their decision to seek an early meeting with the International Donor Community to discuss with them the way forward for the early commencement of House-to-House Registration, as recommended by the various International Groups who observed the 2006 National and Regional Elections in Guyana.

The Parliamentary Opposition Parties were up-dated on recent developments within the Commission and reaffirmed their commitment to fully support the early commencement and conduct of House-to-House Registration.
