PRESS RELEASE By the Parliamentary Opposition Parties PNCR-1G, AFC and GAP-ROAR Wednesday 13 June 2007

The Parliamentary Opposition Parties met again today to determine what progress has been made, since their meeting with the Chairman and Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), on Tuesday, 22 May, 2007, with respect to the preparation of a new National Register of Registrants (NRR) through the preferred methodology of House-to-House Registration.

The Parliamentary Opposition Parties were reassured, at that meeting, that the Chairman and Commissioners were committed to their decision, made at their meeting on 20 February 2007, that House-to-House Registration is the preferred method for the preparation of a new NRR, from which a Clean Voters’ List will be extracted, which would be periodically up-dated by the conduct of Continuous Registration, in preparation for the forthcoming Local Government and all future Elections in Guyana.

The Parliamentary Opposition Parties wish to remind the Chairman and Commissioners that they were informed that GECOM was in the process of refining the methodology and budget for the conduct of House-to-House Registration and would notify them of any material developments in that regard. Since the Parties have not yet heard from GECOM about the outcome of that exercise, we can only assume that the exercise is not yet completed.

In the circumstances, we urge GECOM to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and to share the results of their efforts, as early as is possible, with the Parliamentary Opposition Parties.

The Parties are awaiting word from the International Donor Community about an early meeting to discuss with them the way forward for the early commencement of the preparation of a new National Register of Registrants through the conduct of House-to-House Registration, as recommended by the various International Groups who observed the 2006 National and Regional Elections in Guyana.
