Madam Gu Xiulian, Vice-Chairwoman of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the Parliament of the People’s Republic of China, called on the Leader of the People's National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin on July 10, 2007.

Madam Gu was accompanied by a twelve (12) member delegation, which included Liu Zhenhua, Member of the Central Committee, Lv Congmin, Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the NPC, Wang Qingxi, Deputy Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the NPC, Wu Quanzhi, Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Henan Provincial People’s Congress and Zhao Yong, Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Bureau, General Office of the Standing Committee of the NPC.

Mr. Corbin was accompanied by the Chairman of the PNCR, Mr. Winston Murray, CCH, MP, General Secretary, Mr. Oscar Clarke, Chief Whip, Mr. E. Lance Carberry, Deputy Speaker, Ms. Clarissa Riehl, Central Executive Member of the PNCR, Mr. Aubrey Norton, M.P., National Chairperson of the National Congress of Women (NCW), Ms. Cheryl Sampson, Member of Parliament, Ms. Africo Selman and former Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Ronald Austin. The meeting took place in the Hall of Heroes of Congress Place, Sophia.

Madam Gu and Mr. Corbin took the opportunity to review the relations between the two parties and countries and in particular the circumstances which give rise to those relations. They both identified the fact that it was under a PNC Administration that steps were taken which led to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Co-operative Republic of Guyana on June 27, 1972. The establishment of diplomatic relations laid the foundation for cooperation across a spectrum of issues, such as health, energy and education, and the coordination of activities in international forums. Madam Gu express her delight at being in Guyana and said that her visit will serve to improve relations at the Party and state level. In particular, she referred to the fact that she had come to Guyana during the year that the 35th Anniversary of relations between the two countries were being celebrated. She was therefore happy to be in Guyana at this particular moment in time.

Mr. Corbin took the opportunity to brief Madam Gu on the role of the Party in promoting national development and seeking justice for all the people of Guyana. He adverted to the fact that the Party will soon be holding a major Congress in approximately two weeks time, while later in the year it will be celebrating 50 years of its existence. Madam Gu extended congratulations on both counts. The PNCR Leader also took the opportunity to praise China for its rapid economic development, a phenomenon which he had witnessed during his visit to that country in 2005.

The exchanges came to an end after approximately an hour and Madam Gu was escorted out of the building by Mr. Corbin. They shook hands and she departed for her next appointment.
