PRESS RELEASE LEADER OF PNCR AND PNCR EXTEND CONDOLENCES ON THE ASSASINATION OF BENAZIR BHUTTO Thursday, December 27, 2007

The Leader of the PNCR and Opposition, Mr. Robert H. O. Corbin and the People’s National Congress Reform condemn in the strongest terms the cowardly assassination of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Ms. Benazir Bhutto earlier today. The Party expresses its shock and outrage at the dastardly act that also took the life of this much admired leader of the people of Pakistan and several other innocent citizens.

Those who have committed this assassination appeared to be against the reconciliation of the political forces in Pakistan and the ongoing efforts to deepen and entrench democracy in Pakistan. From all of the information available this assassination has been carried out by adherents of terrorism. The Party must therefore reaffirm its position that terrorism has no place in a democratic society.

Ms. Bhutto was one of the primary leaders of the democratic process in Pakistan who was committed to the improvement of the democratic climate, the reconciliation of contending forces, the improvement of the quality of life of the people of that country and the improvement of stability in the region. Her death, therefore, must be a blow to the efforts of the democratic forces of Pakistan and a threat to the stability of the region. The Party, however, hopes that the powerful ideas and the goals for which Ms. Bhutto lived and died will be pursued by the people of Pakistan beyond her death.

The Party and the Opposition Leader therefore wish to extend their condolences to the people of Pakistan and more particularly the husband, children and relatives of Mrs. Bhutto, the members of her Party and the family and relatives of those killed in the infamous act on the death of this much admired leader of the people of Pakistan and other citizens.
