PRESS RELEASE PNCR CONDEMNS THE SHOOTING TO DEATH OF MARCYN KING People’s National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia Georgetown, Guyana. Tuesday, March 11, 2008

The People’s National Congress Reform wishes to condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the shooting to death of Ms. Marcyn King, sister of Rondell “Fineman” Rawlins, aged 36, and the mother of three, and offers condolences to the bereaved family.

The circumstances in which Ms. King was killed and which are now familiar to the Guyanese public and the law enforcement authorities, bear all the hallmarks of a hired gun for a reprisal killing. This is a dangerous development and the PNCR demands that the PPP/C Administration takes urgent and expeditious measures to protect the lives of innocent relatives of those who are on the police wanted list.

At the same time, the Party is deeply concerned that such an apparently revenge execution could lead to retaliation. The Party, therefore, believes that the security forces should redouble their efforts to prevent possible tit for tat retaliation killings, which can only fuel the socially corrosive cycle of violence and further threaten the social fabric of the society.

For some time now, it has been a contention of the PNCR that contract killers, pointing to the existence of phantom organizations, are abroad in this society, with scant regard for human life. This phenomenon must cause us to reflect on the nature of the socialization process in our country and the causal factors, including the role of the family and the education system.

Ms. King’s killing, once again points to the need for the PPP/C Administration to urgently implement a holistic national security strategy, supported by all National Stakeholders, to ensure the security and protection of all the citizens of our Republic.
