The People’s National Congress Reform wishes to inform that the Leader of the Opposition and PNCR, Mr. Robert H. O. Corbin, MP has agreed to a meeting with President Bharrat Jagdeo at his request at the Office of the President, today, June 17, 2008. In the Constitutional Office of the Leader of the Opposition, the Party Leader is expected to be consulted by the President from time to time on matters of national importance.

The PNCR believes that this meeting is a direct result of the existing situation in Guyana and comes in the wake of recent marches and demonstrations held by the PNCR to seek redress for such issues as the violation of the human rights of the citizens of the Republic, the crippling rise in the cost of living; the threat to the freedom of expression as is exemplified by the suspension of the licence of CNS Channel 6; the reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT); the withdrawal of the charges against Oliver Hinckson and the issue of good governance. The Party is of the view that if the Government is prepared to respond to the issues raised by the PNCR, then it is in the people’s interest and that of the nation to enter into discussions to bring relief and to find permanent solutions to our myriad problems. The PNCR believes that such discussions can serve to clarify the Party’s position on several issues including the proposed hosting of Carifesta X and the long term stability of the nation.

The Party, however, wishes to emphasize that the meeting today, by itself, will not detract from the Party’s Agenda with respect to the spiraling cost of living and other human rights issues affecting the people of Guyana at this time.

The Leader of the Opposition will be briefing the press on the discussions with President Jagdeo immediately after their meeting at the Office of the President.
