PNCR Message to the Captain of the West Indies Cricket Team, Christopher Gayle On the winning of the First Test Match against England, Digicel Series 7th February, 2009--PRESS RELEASE Monday 9 February, 2009

I extend on behalf of the People’s National Congress Reform to you and the other members of the West Indies cricket team, heartfelt congratulations on your decisive victory over the English team at Sabina Park on Saturday last. I say decisive because it is clear that you outplayed your rivals in most departments of the game.

Your victory has come at a critical moment in the history of the game in the region. The regional team has had very little success in the area of test cricket and other forms of the game. The effect on the rest of the region needs no elaboration. Correspondingly, your victory on Saturday last has planted the seeds of hope that, finally, our cricket is poised to come into its own and, as you have said, this series can be a defining moment in the development of our cricket. My Party believes that your assessment is correct and your evaluation will prove to be accurate.

The victory, in our judgement, was the result of impressive team work. This too bodes well for our cricket. We believe that an essential ingredient for further success is the team playing as a unit with every member understanding their role and responsibility. Lastly, it would be appropriate to commend you for your outstanding captaincy which was critical to the success of your team.

My Party, therefore, looks forward to keen rivalry for the remainder of the series, since we expect the West Indies to continue to do well and your English rivals are also likely to play out of their skins to redeem themselves.
