A Message from the National Chairperson Of the National Congress of Women On International Women’s Day 2009--PRESS RELEASE Friday, March 06, 2009

The National Congress of Women (NCW), the women’s arm of the People’s National Congress Reform, salutes all women in Guyana and throughout the world as we observe International Women’s Day (IWD) 2009 on Sunday March 8th. The NCW also endorses the United Nations theme for International Women’s Day 2009 – “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls”.

As we think of International Women’s Day 2009, we must remember Clara Zetkin and those women in Germany who initiated the observance of this day. International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the achievements of women and to highlight the needs and concerns of women on the national, regional and global agenda As such we also salute our own Guyanese women, those stalwarts of the PNC Women’s Auxiliary and the WRSM, the forerunners to our organisation, who worked hard for the advancement of the women of our organisation and Guyana as a whole.

This year, International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to call women and men everywhere to action by shining a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in his IWD message notes, and I quote “All of us – men and women, citizens and leaders – have a responsibility to help end violence against women. States must honour their commitments to prevent violence, bring perpetrators to justice and provide redress to victims. And each of us must speak out in our families, workplaces and communities, so that acts of violence against women cease."

These words reinforce the call of the National Congress of Women for all to become involved in the pursuit of removing this scourge in our society. Despite the fact that the Domestic Violence Act was passed in the Parliament of Guyana since 1996, and there have been programmes including the “Stamp It Out” campaign against Domestic Violence, as well as the annual observance of International Day of Violence against Women, this heinous act is still prevalent in our society. Too often reports in the media give information of the many women who have lost their lives as a result of Domestic Violence.

As we observe IWD 2009, the NCW calls on all Guyanese, our brothers and sisters, to heed the call of the Secretary General of the United Nations, and work together for the eradication of Domestic Violence from the Guyanese society.
