ISLAMIC SCHOLARS PAYS COURTESY CALL ON PNCR LEADER--PRESS RELEASE Monday, March 09, 2009




Today, Monday, March 9, 2009, Shaikh Mohamed Khalil Yaffa accompanied by Executive members of the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT) paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the PNCR and Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin at his Sophia, Congress Place office.

Shaikh Mohamed Khalil Yaffa, an Arabic Language Program coordinator and instructor at the Centre for Islamic Development in Halifax, Canada is in Guyana for the GIT’s annual Islamic Awareness Week (IAW) programme from March 8-15, 2009 under the theme “Muhammad: Mercy to Mankind”. Shaikh Mohamed is also an Arabic teacher at Ihsan Islamic School, Centre for Islamic University in Halifax. He is accompanied by Dr. Sabeel Ahmed, Director of Gainpeace, an outreach project of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and Shaikh Zia Khan, Director of the Centre for Islamic Development.

Accompanying Mr. Corbin at this meeting were Mr. Oscar Clarke, General Secretary of the Party, Mr. Nazir Ally, former Member of Parliament and of PNCR East Berbice Regional and Ms. Florence Bourne, member of the Central Executive of the Party.

Among the issues discussed was the challenging role for Islam in Guyana as well as promoting world peace.

As part of the IAW’s full week of activities, other events include television interviews and call-in programmes, radio programmes, visit to hospitals, medical outreach programmes, feeding programmes and clothing distribution among others.
