COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY GENERAL CALLS ON THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION--PRESS RELEASE Thursday July 2, 2009




Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Mr. Kamalesh Sharma accompanied by the Director and Head of the Secretary General’s office, Mr. Simon Grimson, Assistant Spokeswoman, Ms. Yvonne Chin and Adviser to the Secretary General, Ms. Juliet Solomon, called on the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Robert H.O. Corbin, on July 2, 2009, at his Congress Place, Sophia office. Also present were Mr. Oscar Clarke, General Secretary of the Party, and members of the Central Executive Committee, Mr. E. Lance Carberry, MP and Ms. Clarissa Riehl, MP.

Mr. Corbin welcomed the Commonwealth Secretary General and his delegation to Guyana.

The Commonwealth Secretary General and the Party Leader exchanged views on a number of international, national and regional matters of mutual concern. They also took the opportunity to discuss the significance of the Commonwealth in fostering democracy and democratic practices; the current CARICOM Heads of Government Conference which is being held in Guyana; the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Regional meeting, which is also scheduled to be held in Guyana from July 12 -16, 2009; and the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference.

After the pleasant exchange and consideration of matters of mutual concern, Mr. Corbin wished Mr. Sharma and his delegation a happy stay in Guyana and a successful journey to London.
