PNCR MESSAGE ON THE 44TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY OF THE CO-OPERATIVE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA--PRESS RELEASE Tuesday 25 May 2010

The People’s National Congress Reform is pleased to join in commemorating and saluting this significant milestone of the 44th Independence Anniversary of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

For it to be meaningful, the celebration of the occasion should be accompanied by serious soul searching as to how far we have travelled and achieved as a nation, particularly in keeping with our motto of “One People, One Nation, One Destiny.”

Guyana is pervaded by racial tension as a result of the Government’s discriminatory practices. There is rampant marginalization, violence, corruption, drug trafficking, torture and other human rights violations that go unheeded. We cut a poor picture in the eyes of the world when countries have to call for inquiries to be conducted after scathing reports from the UN Human Rights Council Conference. It is worst when we see how we as a nation are responding to these calls for an independent and impartial Inquiry into human rights violations.

On this 44th Anniversary of our National Independence we do not have much to shout about in terms of local democracy. The Government has continued to honour “good faith” in the breach in relation to the Local Government Reforms and other constitutional provisions. They also failed to establish the Public Procurement Commission in keeping with the Constitution.

Let us resolve to be responsible citizens and meet these challenges with the creativity and imagination our forefathers have demonstrated. The PNCR is firmly convinced that we have the resilience and ingenuity as a people to correct the wrongs and build a nation of which our children would be proud. Let us work together to build a truly prosperous Guyana which we will be proud to own and feel honoured to serve.

HAPPY 44TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY!
