GUYANA ISLAMIC TRUST (GIT) PAYS COURTESY CALL ON THE PEOPLE’S NATIONAL CONGRESS REFORM AS ISLAM AWARENESS WEEK IS OBSERVED



A high level delegation from the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT), on Wednesday 9th March 2011, paid a courtesy call on Leader of the Opposition and Leader of The People’s National Congress Reform Robert Corbin M.P, PNCR Presidential Candidate Mr. David Granger and General Secretary Mr. Oscar Clarke.



This visit was part of a programme to observe Islamic Awareness Week (IAW) from Friday 4th March to Sunday 13th March 2011 under the theme, “Islam, the Divine Model for society”. The Islam Awareness Week aims to raise national interest and awareness of Islam as a Divine, Unique and Complete System of Life.



Mr. Corbin acknowledged that the PNC has always supported and maintained freedom of religion, noting that the religious community has a fundamental role to play in upholding high moral standards helping citizens develop positive attitudes. Meanwhile, Mr. David Granger noted that Islam enjoys an important place in Guyanese society, and is a powerful force for the promotion of harmony which is so necessary in Guyana in the run up to the General and Regional Elections. He called on the Muslim community to use its influence to maintain a moderate climate as he reiterated the PNCR’s commitment to working with all religions.



The Islamic Delegation included visiting scholars from Toronto Canada Bro. Muhammad Yaffa and Bro. Abu Bakr Hanif, and from the Guyana Islamic Trust locally, Bro. Muhammad Awal, Bro. Muhammad Mujay, Bro. Haseeb Yusuf and Bro. Wazir Baksh. They have committed to championing the cause of morality in the social and political realm.
