PRESS RELEASE PNCR MESSAGE ON THE 34TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA People’s National Congress Reform Congress Place, Sophia, Georgetown, Guyana. Thursday, February 19, 2004

The PNCR extends Mashramani greetings to all Guyanese as we celebrate the Anniversary of our Republican Status.
On the occasion of this 34th Anniversary, the Peoples National Congress Reform is sad to note that there is little cause for optimism in these dark times that now beset us as a Nation. In spite of the chaos, administrative incompetence, economic decline, nepotism, violations of the Rule of Law, infringement of fundamental human rights and the evidence of state sponsored death squads, we enjoin all Guyanese at home and abroad to have confidence that our ingenuity, patriotism and goodwill can overcome these trying times.
The Republic Anniversary and the Mashramani celebrations that decorate them are themselves a tribute to that spirit of patriotism. Just a few short years ago many of those now in authority sought to devalue and destroy the Mashramani festival causing many Guyanese to fear that the festival would die under the weight of official sabotage and suffocation. However, the indomitable spirit of the people prevailed and it proved impossible to quench the Mashramani fever.
Mashramani and the Republic Anniversary coincide with the commemoration of the 1763 slave revolution, one of the noblest and most courageous historical events in the pursuit of our freedom and dignity. As we celebrate the anniversary of our Republic, let us spare some time to reflect on the many lessons that can be learnt from that first struggle for freedom in our land.
Though the pall of death squads and state murderers hang over us, we call on all Guyanese to celebrate the Anniversary of the Republic, confident that the will of the people, the forces of decency and the rule of law will eventually prevail if we keep the faith and continue the struggle together.
The PNCR reassures all Guyanese that the struggle will continue to ensure that evil doers will not be allowed to crush the spirit of the people of Guyana and that decency and respect for the Rule of Law will return to our dear land.
