Chairman of Caricom, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Honourable, Mr. Baldwin Spencer, paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform and the Parliamentary Opposition Mr. Robert H.O. Corbin, M.P. at his Office at Congress Place, Sophia today, Friday, June 25, 2004.

Mr. Baldwin Spencer who was recently elected as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda was on his first visit to the Caricom Secretariat in his capacity as Chairman of the Community.

Accompanying the Prime Minister was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Colin Murdoch. The PNCR’s delegation included Party Chairman, Mr. Vincent Alexander, General-Secretary, Mr. Oscar Clarke and Members of Parliament., Ms. Clarissa Riehl, Raphael Trotman and Deborah Backer.

The Parties discussed the necessary strengthening of Caricom relations and that of the Caribbean Court of Justice, the promotion of a greater role for Parliamentary Opposition Parties in Caricom and Government, and the state of Guyana/Antigua relations. It was noted that there is large number of Guyanese living and working in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Chairman was also updated on the general erosion of Human Rights in Guyana and the Death Squad phenomenon, which has cast a dark shadow on the prospect for the Rule of Law. The talks between the parties were frank, fruitful and friendly.
