Statement By Leader of the PNCR And Leader of the Opposition Mr. Robert H. O. Corbin, Saturday 26th January, 2008. Media Centre, Congress Place, Sophia

The People’s National Congress Reform and I express our shock and dismay at the tragedy which occurred at the Lusignan early this morning and extend sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims. We condemn the wanton murder of innocent citizens of that village, particularly the young people in their homes. Equally we condemn the shooting which occurred at the Police Headquarters last night.

These incidents reflect the fragile security situation in our country which requires leadership and innovative approaches to bring it to an acceptable level. The nature of this incident carried out by unknown and reckless gun-men and seriously affect stability are race relations in Guyana, if not properly handled. We urge all our citizens not to allow the perpetrators of these acts to achieve their objectives.

If Guyana is to progress we need not only a climate of stability, but mutual respect and trust among the people of all races. Let us not allow ourselves to be drawn into racial conflict and confrontation which have adversely affected our Nation in the past.

We urge the Government and particularly the President to act and speak responsibly at this time. We urge all leaders to exert their energies to promote peace. More importantly, we urge the Government to fulfill its constitutional mandate to guarantee the security of our citizens on the East Coast which is the only way to begin the journey to normalcy.
