New Year Message By Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform And Leader of the Opposition Mr. Robert Corbin, MP Thursday, January 1, 2009



It is my pleasant duty to wish all Guyanese at home and abroad a very Happy New Year. The past year, by any standard, has been challenging and difficult. Yet it holds many lessons for this nation and our people. The question is whether our people will take these lessons to heart and map out a plan for this nation which would see a better and more rewarding new year.

The Value Added Tax (VAT) which has been the bane of our existence has remained so in the past year, despite the pleas and arguments of the opposition that it should be reduced to at least 8%. I refer to this tax because it has been primarily responsible for the steep rise
