PRESS STATEMENT RESIGNATION OF MR. WINSTON MURRAY, CCH, MP, CHAIRMAN OF THE PNCR -- Saturday, January 17, 2009

The People’s National Congress Reform wishes to inform the public of the resignation of Mr. Winston Murray, as Chairman of the Party with effect from January 15, 2009.

Mr. Murray has advised that his resignation is a direct result of his principled objection to the issuance of a statement in the name of the PNCR which essentially amounted to an abandonment of the position that he publicly represented at the consultations held by President Jagdeo during September of last year (2008) on the then proposed Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA.

Mr. Murray was at that time performing the functions of the Leader, since the substantive leader, Mr. Corbin, was abroad. He therefore represented the PNCR’s position both in that capacity and as the spokesperson on the subject matter. Mr. Murray has expressed his strongly held view that it has become impossible for him to continue with any credibility in the office of Chairman of the Party. He, however, continues to be a member of the PNCR and a Member of Parliament with the shadow portfolio of Finance and Economic Development. .

Following discussions with the Leader, Mr. Murray has agreed to be a key member of a special Task Force set up to redefine a strategic plan for the future of the PNCR and to reposition the Party before 2011 as directed by the 14th Biennial Congress.

The Party wishes to thank Mr. Murray for the tremendous contribution he has made over the years as Chairman. The PNCR has summoned a general members meeting for tomorrow, Sunday January 18, at Congress Place Sophia from 3:00PM.
