PRESS STATEMENT By Mr. Clement Corlette Regional Chairman Region # 4 June 1, 2009

The Regional Chairman of Region # 4 rejects as totally false the report printed on page 2 of the Guyana Chronicle of June 1, 2009 under the caption “Region four Chairman assaults Yarrowkabra resident.” Similar inaccurate reports have been made by NCN.

The fact is that Kwame McCoy of the National Communications Network (NCN) who is also a Councillor of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Region # 4 orchestrated a systematic creation of disorder at a community meeting at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway on Sunday May 31, 2009 at approximately 14:30 hrs (2:30 pm).

As a consequence of the actions of Mr. McCoy, with the support of Agent Provocateurs, the Regional Chairman adjourned the meeting to another date and time which would be published and to which the press would be invited.

The Regional Chairman in response to several complaints from residents about issues of concern to them arranged a community meeting for 14:00 hrs on May 31st at the Yarrowkabra outpost and patient waiting centre.

The meeting was to address the following issues:

1. The alleged discrimination against residents by Ms. Philomena Sahoye-Shury on the use of the President’s Youth Choice community building.
2. The alleged fees imposed by Ms. Sahoye-Shury against charcoal burners in the area on behalf of a CDC imposed by Ms. Sahoye-Shury.
3. The need for improved roads.
4. The need for electricity in some areas.
5. The need for a Primary School in the area.
6. Unemployment.

On arrival at the meeting, I noticed that a camera and a microphone were placed at the head table. The cameraman admitted to installing the devices. I advised him to remove them since I did not want the Press present and I wished to only have a meeting with residents. The cameraman agreed and removed the devices. Kwame McCoy intervened in a loud and passionate voice and instructed the cameramen to reinstall the devices. He went on to attack the Regional Chairman as being a dictator and said that this is not the RDC.

Ms. Philomena Sahoye-Shury announced that only she has the mandate to form CDC’s in Guyana. Scuffles then erupted between Shury’s CDC members and residents.

At about 14:50 hrs I addressed the persons present and adjourned the meeting with immediate effect due to the disorder and the fact that the NCN news cannot be relied on to provide balance news reports. I further said that I will reconvene the meeting at a date and time to be determined and to which I will invite the Press generally.

The persons present agreed and I left the meeting with the assurance that I will reconvene the meeting very soon. On entering my vehicle a resident approached me and with alarm explained that McCoy had called the meeting to order and was presiding.

I immediately returned to the meeting and informed Mr. McCoy and Ms. Sahoye-Shury that they could not reconvene the meeting since it was called by me. I promptly thereafter proceeded to leave. Mr. McCoy then shouted “get he out of here”. After McCoy shouted a PPP activist intercepted me menacingly by grabbing the back of my shirt jack suit. I pulled away and sternly scolded the aggressor. I departed from the meeting.

Residents generally agreed that the NCN should not have been the only Press agency to cover the meeting and were displeased with the attitude of McCoy and the mob he allegedly mobilized from Georgetown, Caledonia/Good Success and elsewhere.

The residents also supported my decision to adjourn the meeting. The police was not present at the meeting but there were members from the local policing group.

At no time did I assault anyone from the community.

Clement Corlette
Regional Chairman, Region # 4
